Environmental Services
Horizontal well technology was adapted for environmental remediation in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and we have applied it commercially since the early 1990s to help clients reach complex subsurface targets with fewer surface disturbances.
TALK TO AN ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTOur Engineering Approach
Directional Technologies was selected by an environmental engineering firm to design a hydraulic balancing system for a capped RCRA hazardous waste landfill that had developed a subsurface hydraulic imbalance.
The site contained residues from the manufacture of organic chemical products and was sealed with a synthetic geomembrane cap that could not be disturbed.
Solution Overview
Our team designed and installed two 700-foot horizontal remediation wells constructed entirely of stainless steel to withstand the site’s chemically aggressive environment and heavy mechanical loads. The wells employed a multi-diameter design (10-inch, 6-inch, and 4-inch sections) to accommodate submersible pumps while maintaining an achievable bend radius beneath the landfill cap.
The installation was completed using the entry-exit continuous method, which allowed drilling beneath the geomembrane cap without any surface disturbance. The system successfully restored hydraulic balance and provided sustainable long-term groundwater control.

Why Partner with Directional Technologies
Directional Technologies combines engineering precision with field innovation. Our team of environmental scientists, engineers, and drillers collaborates with consultants and regulatory agencies to ensure every system performs efficiently and meets compliance standards.
We are dedicated to helping clients safely manage subsurface impacts, protect groundwater, control vapor migration, and achieve closure goals for complex environmental sites. With proper M&R planning and execution, remediation systems operate more smoothly, reduce downtime, and support faster site closure.
