Environmental Services
Invented in the 1920s, directional drilling or Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), as it is now known, is a trenchless technology that was originally used in oil fields to increase oil production.

Innovative Horizontal Remediation Solutions for Complex Environmental Challenges
Directional Technologies provides engineered horizontal remediation systems that deliver reliable environmental control and long-term site management. Our Environmental Services Division specializes in designing and installing horizontal wells for remediation, vapor mitigation, groundwater management, and hydraulic control in the most demanding regulatory and geologic conditions.
From RCRA hazardous waste sites to Superfund landfills, our expertise ensures compliance, durability, and measurable performance for every project.
Challenges in Environmental Remediation
Managing environmental sites with chemical residues, capped surfaces, or limited access often requires non-traditional methods.
Conventional vertical wells are not always effective when faced with:
- Synthetic caps that cannot be penetrated
- Chemically aggressive waste materials
- Limited access or surface restrictions
- High mechanical loads due to residue depth
- The need for long well spans and precise installation
Our Engineering Approach
Directional Technologies was selected by an environmental engineering firm to design a hydraulic balancing system for a capped RCRA hazardous waste landfill that had developed a subsurface hydraulic imbalance
The site contained residues from the manufacture of organic chemical products and was sealed with a synthetic geomembrane cap that could not be disturbed.
Solution Overview
Our team designed and installed two 700-foot horizontal remediation wells constructed entirely of stainless steel to withstand the site’s chemically aggressive environment and heavy mechanical loads. The wells employed a multi-diameter design (10-inch, 6-inch, and 4-inch sections) to accommodate submersible pumps while maintaining an achievable bend radius beneath the landfill cap
The installation was completed using the entry-exit continuous method, which allowed drilling beneath the geomembrane cap without any surface disturbance. The system successfully restored hydraulic balance and provided sustainable long-term groundwater control.
